TVB Needs Some Sense

TVB Dramas in Recent Years (2010-present)

2010

Starting in 2010 (if I were to pinpoint a beginning in the downward spiral of the “health” of TVB dramas), Ghost Writer 蒲松齡 (or as I like to call it “葡萄齡” – ‘Grape Writer’), was pretty much garbage. When I thought that TVB could in no way sink any lower because the other dramas in that year were pretty okay, I realized that I was oh-so-very-wrong.

According to Wikipedia (fine. It is an “unreliable source,” but TVB, let’s face it, sucks at clearly relating stats.), the top 10 highest-rated drama series of 2010 were:

10 A Fistful of Stances 鐵馬尋橋 29 43 25 32 1.82 million

statistics from Wikipedia

It’s crazy to me that ‘Grape Writer’ made it on there, but the other dramas weren’t that bad.  Personal favorites (don’t judge) include Can’t Buy Me Love, Every Move You Make (which I’m rewatching right now actually), A Watchdog’s Tale, The Pillow Case Mystery II, and The Mysteries of Love (still making fun of the name Kingsley King to this day).

9 Grace Under Fire 女拳 29 34 26 31 1.83 million
10 Only You Only You 只有您 29 35 28 30 1.83 million

In 2011, I pretty stopped watching a lot of the TVB dramas. Of these 10 even, I think I was selective. If it was garbage – AVOIDI watched: Forensic Heroes III, Yes, Sir. Sorry, Sir!, Grace Under Fire, The Other Truth, Ghetto Justice (of course.), The Rippling Blossom, and Lives of Omission. Of these, most were fairly great disappointments, and all weren’t that great. If I were to pick, I liked Forensic Heroes because forensics/mystery is my thing (shame the cast was all new), Yes, Sir. Sorry, Sir! (Moses as a bumbling “undercover” cop as a teacher -L.O.L. – kays.),  and The Rippling Blossom (SUSHI!!!). Ghetto Justice was pretty good, thus resulting in a Ghetto Justice II. I didn’t quite love love Lives of Omission because TVB just seemed to be milking Laughing Gor – and the whole Michael/Cripple/Bai Co – nah.

2012 – the ship is sure sinkin’ fast.

10 Gloves Come Off 拳王 29.9 35 29 31 34 1.908 million

I’m pretty sure I watched most of there dramas, but none of them are memorable – all fuzzy, that must mean they kinda sucked. I remember Witness Insecurity (haha Bosco the diehard – literally), Divas in Distress, Highs and Lows, Gloves Come Off, Daddy Good Deeds, The Hippocratic Crush, and Three Kingdoms RPG ( I believe…that’s it…(?)). The only one I actually liked was Hippocratic Crush~ Three Kingdoms RpG was funny too, but it definitely died (before the Google=Gu Gu stuff).

9 Always and Ever 情逆三世缘 26.65 37 28 36 1.70 million
10 Brother’s Keeper 巨輪 26.5 33 26 29 1.70 million

Although many of the dramas that I watched and sort of liked did not make the top 10, I will only stick to these top 10. Out of these, I did watch Triumph in the Skies II (I did anticipate this because of all the hype and of course I liked the original, it was oaky, but not good.), Inbound Troubles (OH YEAH~), Bounty Lady, Friendly Fire, A Change of Heart, Will Power (I think somehow I stopped watching in the middle…), Always and Ever (Bobby~ but it wasn’t that good), and Brother’s Keeper (okay, but too retro). Death… you can already see it in the numbers actually, without me saying my insights…numbers sank down to 1.70 million Hong Kongers tuning in compared to the 2.15 max and 1.82 million minimum from 2010.

9 Never Dance Alone 女人俱樂部 25 31 26 27 1.64 million
10 Queen Divas 新抱喜相逢 25 25 24 30 1.62 million

I have to say, most of these are garbage. The numbers show the truth – dem sad 1.60s millions. I only “liked” the top 2: Line Walker & Gilded Chopsticks. Come On, Cousin, I did watch because I enjoyed Inbound Troubles, but TVB’s bloodthirsty antics of milking one-time successes by making a 2nd one in the franchise are usually failures. This one certainly fit the prophecy. Ruse of Engagement was okay, because of the suspense – who’s the traitor??? Black Heart White Soul won Roger Kwok Best Actor, so he definitely showed his skills (this award I acknowledge).

10 With or Without You 東坡家事 24.6 29 24 25 1.59 million

Shamefully, and unfortunately, I think I watched most of the dramas here. I do not want to talk much about these dramas of 2015 though, because these are dark times indeed…dark times. My verdict correlates with this table as my personal favorites aka choices that carry a teeny bit of approval were Ghost of Relativity and Brick Slaves.

2016

We’re in January of 2016, so that must mean the year has started, and TVB has started to roll out more trash right? CORRECT. Currently, I’m ignoring all and just watching Love as a Predatory Affair (愛情食物鏈) because (1) Comedy (2)Kitty Yuen and King Kong should have some “chemistry” (I don’t even know if it’s just to sue this saintly term on TVB stuff but whatevs) from their  街坊廚神 franchise. Sure, it bears the trademark TVB “creative” character names, but this time, in a millennium, they actually work again. Bless.

Why the Failure?

Okay, I just mentioned the trashy “creative” character names. Some of them just fail to be funny. I don’t even know why those people are getting paid. Ugh. Talk about the wrong way to stimulate the economy.

(1) The screenwriters can’t write for life. They develop GARBAGE for plots. WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?! (please excuse my anger. If you are limited to only TVB shizzle, this will happen to you too). Even my mother who spies on neighbors for inspiration can craft better stories.

(2) PAY THOSE PEOPLE. ‘Everyone’ has left. Why? Lack of recognition in terms of treatment, pay, awards, etc. Stop your stupid politics and do things right. Many views, by the way, are discontent with those “Carefree actors/茄哩啡s” because we think they are legit random citizen cameos. Dude. They probably went through training and are part of TVB but know one knows them because YOU, TVB, do not know how to fairly treat your people and nurture them. Everyone deserves a chance. You don’t give proper chances.

(3) Quit buying garbage from overseas. Your dub team is so tiny – I question your budget. You can put the resources you’re wasting here to nurture newcomers or at least try to appease veterans. WHAT ARE YOU DOING.

(4) The conspiracy. People are not stupid. The whole HKTV thing. Ha.

TVB, step up your game.
