Recently, I’ve gotten into yet another kVariety show — but technically this isn’t your typical variety show that’s all fun and games. Although it has its moments of laughter JTBC’s Abnormal Summit is a show where a bunch of foreigners from a wide variety of backgrounds but all residing in Korea gather to debate and share their thoughts on a variety of topics.

From Trump to results from surveys, a panel of foreigners along with Chairmen Jun Hyunmoo + Sung Sikyung and Secretary General Yoo Seyoon usually start by talking about trending or current events topics. Then, Korean representative(s) join the panel and bring up the topic of the debate for that episode. In addition, an “intern” representative from a country different from those of the members would also join the panel to offer their perspective on the matter of debate.
What drew me into the show was that despite the atmosphere being light because every representative not only treats each other with respect, but also embraces different perspectives, many “controversial” or “heavy” topics are discussed, and I was able to learn a lot. One of my favorite episodes was ep 125 when the panel discussed Black Friday and physician and essayist Dr. Namkoong In brought in the topic of emergency medicine. I really liked this episode because as someone who grew up in the U.S. it was refreshing to see that despite everyone’s background, most of the panel agreed that although Black Friday may have its merits, the violence, injuries, and unfortunately deaths occurring one day after a celebration of gratitude is both unnecessary and ironic. It was also awesome when the doc shot down DOTS because of an XRAY somehow showing diamonds??? #burnnnnnnn
Anyway, if you want something new to watch, but nothing that requires too much commitment, you might want to give this show a try — I also just choose certain episodes to watch based on the topics (all on Wikipedia)
Enjoy, and let me know what you think!
